Nagoya University’s Industry-Academia Collaborative Research Center Specializing in Embedded Systems Technology
In Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), the development of application software by a diverse range of third-party developers is essential. The industry-academia collaborative project, “Open SDV Initiative,” brings together a broad range of service providers from various fields, including mobility, gaming, and insurance, as well as Nagoya University and companies with expertise in software engineering.
The project explores sample services and develops specifications for the APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) required to implement them. These APIs serve as interfaces between application software and the vehicle OS.

Open SDV API Specifications and Functional Definition of Vehicle Services
In Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), specifications for service-based APIs are being developed to enable application software to access vehicle functions and capabilities.
Compared with signal-based APIs, which are used to read and write vehicle data, service-based APIs make it easier for third-party developers to develop application software and to manage access permissions on a service-by-service basis.
In addition, to ensure the safety of API calls made by third-party application software and to resolve potential conflicts, access control and arbitration mechanisms are defined as functions of the vehicle OS.
